RESUMO
Objetivo: o presente artigo teve como objetivo realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre a saúde bucal do idoso, com ênfase na relação entre doença periodontal e o envelhecimento. Material e métodos: trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica da literatura, realizada por meio da busca por livros e artigos indexados nas bases científicas SciELO, PubMed, Medline e Teses USP (entre 2004 e 2018). Resultados: o envelhecimento caracteriza-se por um processo que ocorre de forma natural e gradual, sendo capaz de promover limitações e modificações no funcionamento do organismo. Dentre as patologias orais que mais acomete os idosos, pode-se destacar a doença periodontal, a qual pode promover várias complicações na saúde geral desses pacientes. Devido à alta prevalência entre os idosos, tornam-se relevantes ações preventivas e educativas que evitem futuros problemas bucais. Conclusão: dessa maneira, é de extrema importância que o cirurgião-dentista esteja apto para instruir e auxiliar os idosos em sua higienização bucal para diminuir o índice de doença periodontal, assim como promover um tratamento menos invasivo e de qualidade para os idosos.

ABSTRACT
Objective: the aim of this article was to review the literature on the oral health of the elderly, with emphasis on the relationship between periodontal disease and aging. Material and methods: this is a bibliographical review of literature, carried out through the search for books and articles indexed in the scientific bases SciELO, Pub-Med, Medline and Theses USP (between 2004 and 2018). Results: aging is characterized by a process that occurs naturally and gradually, and is capable of promoting limitations and modifications in the functioning of the body. Among the oral pathologies that most affect the elderly, periodontal disease can be highlighted, which can promote several complications in the general health of these patients. Due to the high prevalence among the elderly, preventive and educational actions that avoid future oral problems become relevant. Conclusion: thus, it is extremely important that the dental surgeon be able to prevent and diagnose existing pathologies early, as well as to promote a less invasive and quality treatment for the elderly.
